What we collect, why, who else ever sees it, and exactly how your household's school credentials are protected — in plain English first, full detail after.
This policy covers anyone who creates a Know Before Zero household: the owner guardian who subscribes and enters credentials, any co-guardian they invite, and the students whose academic data the household tracks. A student under 13 is never a user of the product — see Children's privacy.
"We," "us," and "Know Before Zero" mean the Know Before Zero product and the person operating it. Know Before Zero is an independent product, not a school district, not a division of PowerSchool or Instructure, and not covered by your district's own privacy notices.
| Category | Examples | Source |
|---|---|---|
| School portal credentials | SIS (Home Access Center) login; LMS (Canvas) observer token | Entered by the owner guardian |
| Academic data | Grades, category weights, assignments, due dates, missing/late/submitted status, schedule | Fetched from the SIS & LMS on your behalf |
| Household & account data | Guardian name/email, student names & grade level, notification & voice preferences | You, at signup |
| Billing data | Plan, billing email, payment status | Stripe — we never see or store full card numbers |
| Product usage | Login events, fetch success/failure, page views on the dashboard | Automatically, to keep the service working |
We do not collect data from your child's device, browser history, or any account we were not explicitly given access to.
School portal passwords are the most sensitive thing you give us, so they get the most protection:
We use a small number of vendors to run Know Before Zero. Each only receives the minimum needed to do its job, under a contract that forbids using your data for anything else.
| Vendor | What they do | What they receive |
|---|---|---|
| Payment processor (Stripe) | Billing & checkout | Billing email, payment method — never your school credentials |
| Email delivery provider | Sends your weekly report & notes | Recipient email address, message content |
| Database & hosting provider | Stores encrypted data, runs the fetch jobs | Encrypted credentials, grades, assignment snapshots |
| AI provider (Anthropic) | Drafts the weekly report & prep packets | A structured summary of grades/assignments only — never credentials, never raw portal pages |
We disclose data beyond this list only if required by law, and — except where legally prohibited — we'll tell the owner guardian first.
A student under 13 never has a Know Before Zero account, login, or password. They may receive an email addressed to them — a weekly note or a reminder — only because a guardian explicitly enabled it by entering that student's own email address, and a guardian can turn it off at any time.
We do not knowingly collect information directly from a child. Everything about a student comes from the guardian's own SIS/LMS access, which the guardian is already entitled to as the parent or legal guardian of that student.
Texas residents have specific rights under the Texas Data Privacy and Security Act; requests under it can be made to the contact address in §12 and will be answered within the statutory period.
Know Before Zero is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by any school district, PowerSchool, or Instructure. Home Access Center® and Canvas® belong to their respective owners and are referenced here only to describe compatibility.
We act as your household's agent, using the access credentials you already hold as a parent or legal guardian — the same way you might authorize any other person or tool to check your child's grades on your behalf. We are not a school official, a district vendor, or a party to your district's own student-data agreements.
If this policy changes in a way that matters — what we collect, who we share it with, or how long we keep it — we'll email the owner guardian before the change takes effect, not just post a new date at the top of this page.
